Would a guy get screwed up in the rest of his relationships if he lost his one first love?

If there was this one girl he really wanted to be with years ago, that he really loved; but circumstances tore them apart even though they both loved each other but were lost to one another until well after they each had other lives going.....his life included 3 kids by at least two mothers, the first kid shortly after he had lost his true love.....Will fate ever bring them out of their stupidity and back to admitting that they still care, or will he be a dumb azz and keep his pride intact while knowing he is screwing his heart over and messing up each and every relationship since the one he really wanted, and may still have yet.....not a movie, real life lol.
